CHAS application help
We write every document CHAS asks for, built around your actual trade, then complete the application on your behalf and answer the assessor. You fill in one questionnaire and get on with the job.
What CHAS actually asks for
CHAS is an SSIP member scheme, so the core assessment follows the SSIP core criteria. That means a set of documents that have to exist, say the right thing, carry a date and a signature, and match your business rather than a template.
A health and safety policy that fits you
Signed, dated within the last twelve months, with a named responsible person and arrangements that describe the work you actually do. Generic downloads are the single most common rejection.
Risk assessments for your real activities
Not a folder of every hazard in construction. The ones that apply to your trades, with your control measures and your named assessor.
Competence and training evidence
A training matrix naming your people, their cards and certificates, and how you check that a subcontractor is competent before they start.
Accident and incident records
Your accident book position, RIDDOR reportable incidents in the last three years and what you did about them. An empty record is fine, a missing system is not.
Insurance certificates
Employers liability and public liability, in date, in the right name, at the right limits. We check them before submission rather than after a rejection.
Consultation and communication
How safety information reaches the people on site. Toolbox talks, inductions, briefing records. Assessors look for evidence, not intent.
Which CHAS membership do you need?
Do not buy a level higher than the one your client is asking for. If you are not sure, send us the wording the main contractor used and we will tell you which one clears it.
CHAS Standard
Health and safety only, assessed against the SSIP core criteria. This is what most main contractors mean when they say they need you SSIP accredited.
CHAS Advanced
Health and safety plus the wider question set that used to be PAS 91: environment, quality, equality, finance, anti bribery and modern slavery. It does not meet the Common Assessment Standard, so check the wording before you buy it.
CHAS Elite
The Common Assessment Standard through CHAS. This is the one to get when a Tier 1 contractor, a Build UK member or a public sector framework asks for the Common Assessment Standard by name. Version 6 of the standard applies from 1 November 2026.
What it costs with us
£749 for the full done for you service: every document written for your trade, the application completed on your behalf, the evidence uploaded, assessor queries answered by us, up to two rounds, and anything rejected fixed and resubmitted free until you pass. £395 if you would rather have the documents and submit it yourself. £249 a year after that to keep it renewed. Add a second scheme at the same time for £249. The scheme's own membership fee is paid by you directly to them and we tell you what it is before you commit.
What we do, and what we do not
We are a documentation and submission service. We are not health and safety consultants. Here is the line, drawn before you pay rather than after.
- We are not a health and safety consultancy and we do not carry out site inspections or act as your competent person
- We do not issue CHAS membership. CHAS assess and CHAS decide. We prepare and submit
- We do not sell CSCS cards, IPAF, PASMA, SMSTS or NEBOSH qualifications
- We do not invent evidence. If you have no insurance and no training records, we cannot write them into existence
- We do not give legal advice, and nothing on this page is legal advice
- We cannot guarantee an outcome where your business does not meet the scheme minimum, but we will tell you before you spend money
Questions we get asked
How long does a CHAS application take?
We usually have a full submission ready within five to seven working days of you returning our questionnaire. CHAS then assess it, typically within a week or two depending on their queue and the level you have applied for.
What does CHAS itself cost?
CHAS charge their own membership fee based on your size and the level you choose, and it is paid by you directly to them. Our £749 covers the documents, the submission and the assessor queries. We will tell you what the CHAS fee will be before you commit so there are no surprises.
What happens if CHAS reject something?
We fix it and resubmit at no extra cost, as many times as it takes, as long as the information you gave us was accurate. Assessor queries come to us rather than to you.
We already have some policies. Can you just fill the gaps?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper. Send us what you have and the level you need. We will tell you what can be kept, what needs rewriting and what is missing, then quote for the gap only.
Do I need CHAS or will another SSIP scheme do?
SSIP schemes carry mutual recognition through Deemed to Satisfy, so a main contractor asking for SSIP will normally accept CHAS, SMAS, SafeContractor or Constructionline equally. If your client has named CHAS specifically, get CHAS. If they have just said SSIP, tell us who the client is and we will pick the cheapest route that satisfies them.
Are you part of CHAS?
No. We are independent. We are not an assessment body, not an SSIP member scheme and we have no arrangement with CHAS. We work for you.
Can you do the renewal each year too?
Yes, £249 a year per scheme. We diary the date, refresh the policies, update the insurance and training records and resubmit before it lapses, so you never lose the accreditation mid job.
Tell us what CHAS level you need
Send us your trade, roughly how many people you have and who is asking for it. We come back with a fixed price, usually the same working day.
